Toray's lightning protection surfacing films utilize state-of-the-art embedded foils for lighting strike and grounding applications, while still allowing for easy handling in production. In addition, Toray can integrate lightning strike protection into compression molded parts and thermoplastic laminates, taking a step out of the production process to improve efficiency and reduce cost.

Lightning Strike Solutions from Toray Advanced Composites

Aircraft rely on embedded metallic foils for protection from all forms of lightning strike. Toray Advanced Composites offers several solutions that are compatible with our thermosets, thermoplastics, and compression molded parts for integral lightning strike protection.

Material Formats

Composite Surfacing Films

Composite surfacing films represent epoxy-based filled films which are laminated to the metallic foils. The composite surfacing film provides a protective layer for the composite and surfacing film, protecting the composite from paint stripping cycles and providing an aerodynamic protective surface for the lightning strike foils.

Toray Cetex® RTL

Toray Cetex® reinforced thermoplastic laminates (RTL) represent consolidated multi-ply oriented laminates. A lightning strike metallic foil can be integrated as the first or outer plies in aerostructure applications that require external protection from lightning strikes.

Compression Molding

Compression molding utilizes chopped resin coated fibers in a closed mold to fabricate composite parts. Parts on aircraft may need lightning strike protection, so Toray integrates a copper or metallic screen for lightning strike protection as the first layer of a compression molded part.

Composite Lightning Strike Protection

Toray's composite surfacing films utilize embedded metallic foils to achieve zone 1–3 protection. Heavier weight metallic foils are utilized for increased protection.

Conductive Foil Protection

Composite surfacing films provide a protective layer for the lightning strike foils. Damage can occur during paint stripping cycles and repairs. For compression molding processes and thermoplastic thermoforming processes, the high pressures of the molding operation provide a protective resin rich area for the metallic lightning strike foils.

Lightweight

Aerostructures demand the lightest weight possible for lightning strike protection. Toray incorporates lightweight conductive screens and foils embedded into the composite to achieve the lightest weight for the maximum effectiveness. Lightning strike foils range from 0.029–0.04 psf (142–195 gsm).

Toray MicroPly™ TC235SF-1

Toray MicroPly™ TC235SF-1 is an epoxy composite surfacing film, allowing a smooth, paintable surface from tooling or, a thin-skinned honeycomb stiffened composite structure. It may be cured under vacuum only pressure or under low autoclave pressure.
