HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook D-cover

This project was completed under the company name TenCate Performance Composites, prior to our acquisition by Toray Industries and name change to Toray Performance Materials Corporation in 2019.

HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook

The world' thinnest laptop, the HP Spectre weighs in at only 1.1 kg (2.45 lbs). TenCate’s Cetex® TC920 was specifically chosen to help achieve the lightweight, thin profile, and to dissipate heat when in operation on a user’s lap. The bottom shell is first thermoformed and features extensive injection overmolding for fine details.

TenCate’s Cetex® TC920 is a polycarbonate and ABS thermoplastic blend providing impact resistance, high strength, and inherent fire retardancy without secondary fillers. TC920 is supplied in laminate form and pressed to shape. The part isthen injection overmolded to achieve the fine details for closures and brackets. This innovative design provides the benefits of composites (lightweight/high strength) while minimizing radiant heat, unlike metals.

TenCate Cetex® TC920 is based upon carbon woven fabric with polycarbonate/ABS for impact resistance. TC920 meets UL-94 V0 standards without secondary fire retardant fillers, and the material be reformed and recycled.

Toray Cetex® TC920

Toray Cetex® TC920 is a high impact strength polycarbonate / ABS blend designed for consumer electronics. It features a high-quality surface finish. TC920 is easily formable and intricate details can be easily overmolded using injection grade PC/ABS.
