We are seeking a motivated, proactive Research Scientist to join the Research and Product Development team on the location in Nijverdal. You will be supporting R&PD projects and activities and support activities of the Composites Material Research Laboratory (CMRL) group as well. CMRL is established in July of 2021, as part of Toray Advanced Composites in the R&D department, and is comprised of a small group of scientists conducting fundamental researches of thermoplastic and thermoset composites for the future of aerospace, industrial and automotive industries. As an integral part of this group, you will contribute by performing thermal, chemical, and mechanical tests, designing, and executing experiments, and collecting and analyzing data. This position will work closely with senior staff to develop the materials and technologies that will move the future more safely, more efficiently, and to new frontiers.

Location will be in Nijverdal, the Netherlands.

The Research Scientist’s core responsibilities

  • Perform research activities for structural polymers and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites.
  • Compile, interpret and explain results with scientific competence under guided direction and instruction into internal reports such as weekly reports and presentations.
  • Perform skill sensitive tasks from start to finish including but not limited to; preparing samples, organizing test samples in preparation for tests, performing various tests, and collecting data under guided directions and instructions.
  • Maintain schedules, track project progress, and communicate progress to senior staff.
  • Investigate fundamental phenomena and mechanisms of carbon fiber, matrix resin, and carbon fiber reinforced composites as required under guided directions and instructions.
  • Promote innovative ideas, concepts, and experimental procedures through participation of conferences, workshops and literature/ patent searches and reviews.
  • Participates in external (International) research projects; internally and with third parties.
  • Jointly responsible for maintaining a safe working environment and implementing safe operating procedures to ensure an accident-free record and continued compliance with all waste and environmental regulations.

Experience, education and skills:

  • Bachelor degree in a chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or equivalent experience, required.
  • +1 year undergraduate experience in research or technical development of polymer and polymer composite materials.
  • Good level background in thermoplastics and/or thermosets preferred.
  • Good level in verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess a high level of knowledge of technical testing techniques and procedures with laboratory testing
  • Ability to set priorities, follow schedules and manage own time.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
  • Ability to self-motivate and take initiative.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.

The compensation package includes:

• Salary depending on work experience;

• 23 vacation days and 19 ADV days per year;

• travel allowance if you live more than 6 km from Nijverdal;

• excellent other conditions such as, for example, a supplement of up to 100% for additional birth leave.
